Area Information

There are more than 148 lakes in a 35 km radius of Likely.  Quesnel Lake is the biggest lake and the Jewel of the Cariboo.  Set among the Cariboo Mountains, Quesnel Lake offers some of the finest wilderness experiences in the world.  It is the deepest fjord lake in North America.  The lake has three arms, each with a unique story to tell.  The north arm has sandy beaches and an ancient cedar forest.  The east arm has Fjord like rock walls with spectacular water falls.  The west arm stretches to the town of Likely, where the lake drains into the Quesnel River.

Boating on Quesnel Lake is exceptional with 523 km (325 miles) of scenic shoreline. Rainbow and lake trout, dolly varden and kokanee are large and plentiful and the rivers offer many opportunities for world class fly fishing.  Eagle and black bear sightings are common.  The more elusive grizzly bear and mountain goat can be spotted from the Keithly or Matthew Road where side roads lead to impressive viewpoints and prime habitats for a variety of game and waterfowl.  Likely has been involved in rearing Chinook salmon for a number of years.  Approximately 250,000 fingerlings are released from the Likely fish hatchery each year in April and travelers can watch the salmon spawning at the mouth of the Quesnel River from August to early October.
